Shoplifters
Wow. Shoplifters was slow, sweet, and kind, but deep down I knew that things couldn’t last. Their life was impossible to sustain, the lie impossible to keep up. I wanted it to be, but it wasn’t. And so, I felt very conflicted.
This was a chosen family. Yes, they needed each other in that moment. But their life was far from ideal. Their choices weren’t always right. the kids couldn’t go to school, and they learned to steal to survive. It was all done out of necessity.
God, I am so conflicted. So, so conflicted.
Koreeda is a master at storytelling, at building characters and emotional connections. My emotions linger long after the credits.
