About 10 minutes in, during the Supermarket Mask scene, a woman walked out and never came back lmao Review:Eddington is a period-piece about the horrors of 2020 and the Covid pandemic, but it tackles and satirizes so much of our current cultural and behavioural habits that the neo-western also becomes a subtle black comedy. Initially, the film feels like the opening scenes to Beau is Afraid, with absolute anxiety and chaos ravaging the streets in a time when they should be empty, forcing the local law enforcement to display their ultimate ineptitudes and overall incompetency in their jobs. The feud between sheriff Joe Cross and mayor Ted Garcia highlights the division between political parties during the 2020 election and how both Trump and Biden built their campaigns around the fears felt by the average American and people worldwide. This division is also mirrored by the audience, as people will either LOVE or HATE this film for unapologetically exploring the surface level of conspiracy theories, Jared Leto-like sex cults, ANTIFA, political violence, weaponizing trauma, nurse abuse, police brutality, racial injustice, white saviour complex, and the impact of social media in the real world. The hole that Joe digs for himself ultimately leads to a climax that feels both unrealistic yet extremely plausible had the political and societal tensions of 2020 boiled over past a point of no return. While I did expect a little more from this film, Aster subverts expectations and dives away from horror, turning what could have easily been a character drama into an anxiety-riddled nightmare of relatability that hits a little too close to home. By the end, you’re left wondering what was the point of any of it, which is exactly how most people feel about the consequences and effects of the pandemic that seemingly fizzled away in time after its abrupt start. Ultimately, Eddington is about division within community and how quickly things fall apart when bad actors disturb the peace or think they are above the law. First words after watching: “He would end the movie like that.”
