funny how i'm attracted to every single person in this movie

i fear ive watched too many good movies recently to even pretend this one isn't kinda shit

incredible performances from everyone. very chekhov in terms of script. wonderfully quiet

settle in, this is gonna be an long one. firstly i want to say, there's lots of talk around jacob elordi's casting, which i do have opinions about, but the most blatant mistake this movie makes is cathy's age. having cathy as a 30 year old instead of a 17 year old (maybe done to allow for all the countless sex scenes without people complaining, perhaps just so they could cast margot robbie) makes the entire plot uncomfortable and the entire character of cathy purely different. so much of her personality comes from teh feral wildness of her youth, which remains even when she's "tamed" by staying with the lintons for a while. which alsp makes much more sense to happen to a teenager. the sex scenes, and cathy and heathcliff getting together make the plot so boring. it's literally just cathy hating her husband (for no good reason) and cheating on him with a bdsm subplot? even without looking at this movie as an adaptation of the book, it's boring in terms of plot, with its main attraction being sex scenes. looking at it as an adaptation of the book is painful. the book is about the human condition, it captures something so uniquely of people, how people are good and bad and it's all important. the movie is about sex, alsp hurt in theme by the cutting of cathy's daughter. i don't know how common that inclusion is in the plots, but when i read the book, cathy jr is a hugely important part in both the book as a whole, and the judging of heathcliffs character. he's a bad person. so is cathy. so is isabella. so is hindley. edgar is perhaps the only normal person in the book. i will also say, i didn't mind the crazy set pieces and costumes as much as i thought i would. except the skin room. i HATED the skin room. i do think heathciff being discriminated against is also important to hs character as a whole, but that's fine in this movie since they didn't develop his character anyway. and also hindley, but they replaced him with the dad. yeah. not great.
