Over the Garden Wall
I’d been hearing about this show for so long now and for me it lives up to the hype. I’m pissed I didn’t get to see Over the Garden Wall as a kid, because it’s just so damn good. Easily one of the best things, if not the absolute best thing (I still have a fondness for Samurai Jack) Cartoon Network ever did. Everything about this series screams fall and it’s already going to have a spit in my Halloween rotation for the next years. Just get to chapter 9, the Halloween episode, and you’ll see exactly what I mean. The whole show has such a clear love and understanding of classic animation—the intro of the singing frog is lifted from Flip the Frog, and the entire dreamland section is right out of an old Fleischer brothers cartoon—but never in a pandering, superficial way like so much nostalgic media is these days. Anything with Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry, and John fucking Cleese in it was going to be up my alley anyhow.
