Bad, but the guy can get it

IMO more of an acting showcase than an actually entertaining movie, but it still works because woah boy, that’s some good acting JLaw deserved so much more attention this Awards season, as did Sissy Spacek, who impressed me a whole lot more than another actress that kept showing up in her category

Some fabulous performances in this one. James McArdle is great as a man desperately trying to hold everything together, Dearbhla Molly is hilarious and touching, hiding so much pain behind a prickly exterior, but it’s Fionnula Flanagan who truly stunned me with such a quiet performance. And I mean quiet. Playing a stroke victim forced to use a tablet to communicate, her performance hinges entirely on her physicality. It’s amazing how she can communicate her frustration, pain, and love so clearly without so much as a peep. The gag of the monotone voice of the tablet contrasted with her obvious annoyance is used to great comedic effect, but it’s when the camera just lingers on her face when her performance truly shines. The screenplay has flashes of brilliance, but ultimately I feel this needed a longer runtime to properly develop it’s characters and to dive deeper into plot points that are touched upon but never explored in a satisfactory manor

Absolutely stunning on a technical level, but these kinds of movies don’t do much for me
