Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
This was meant to be the easiest slam dunk of all time, yet it fumbles spectacularly.
The trailer leads you to the impression that this is going to be the movie adapted to the animation medium which would've been sick especially considering the quirkyness of the movie, but instead it's a 2023 what-if story which stinks of Netflix.
Being transparent from day 1 and managing expectations would've been a much better approach than this bait and switch tactic. If they wanted a story following Ramona, advertise that from the start.
The animation is great and indeed the #1 highlight, but the voice acting is not. OG cast are back which is cool but all the performances are dialed in, so when there's a silence, it's LOUD. The dialogue is awkward and feels stiff.
I didn't find the new plot interesting at all, and the fight scenes DRAG for so long you realise you stopped caring 5 minutes ago. It's sad that the animation is wasted on such a boring story. The show also assumes you've watched the movie/read the comic so it's a weird point of entry and incomprehensible for newcomers.
Time travel as a plot device is also a lazy and uninspiring copout.
This is an okay series as obvious by all other reviews, but it is not for me. The idea that you have to trick people to lure them in is ridiculous and tiresome.
