Adolescence
I had no idea you could review series’ on here??
This was certainly something. I love how well it portrayed the young men of today, the dependence on validation from balding internet twats, and the inceldom that rules millions of teenagers.
I know so many kids who are exactly like Jamie (without the murder and I’m from south east). I got every emoji code and nuance, if you said that that was my secondary he attended I would believe you.
It was shocking to me how many people thought Jamie were innocent. All the TikTok comments saying “I wanted to believe he didn’t do it so bad ☹️” were gagging. Because in my mind he was so obviously guilty from just his mannerisms, the desperate yelling of “I ain’t done nothing”, and the look on his face. I had absolutely no sympathy for him; he had no remorse for what he did, and even after brutally murdering a girl, he still thought he was the good guy for not assaulting her too.
His character kind of disgusted me- and I think a part of that comes from how easily I related to him in that counselling session, the unreasonable anger against the adult for speaking of a certain topic. I hate the fact that he was so red pilled that he would only interact with his father as he was the only one he respected.
The third episode really got to me. I have had numerous experiences in uncomfortable therapy sessions, and I have to say that Jamie’s counsellor was a much better person than ones I have previously had. I think Jamie is scarily good at manipulation. The fact he got his counsellor to bring him a drink and half her own sandwich, and disguised himself as an innocent little boy until he got tired of it. He did the same act to his father and tried to with many other people. The part where he was trying to defend himself because he didn’t sexually assault Katie’s dead body when “other boys would’ve” and he “really really wanted to” made me sick. That really is so many people mindset; well, he did this, but at least he didn’t do that. He had no way to justify what he did. Katie barely ‘bullied’ him, and he was unreasonably angry at her for calling him out for being something that he is.
My favourite episode by far was definitely episode four. I loved seeing the world outside Jamie’s facility, how his family coped with finding out their son is a horrible person. I was legitimately angry that they spelled nonce wrong, who does that lol?? Stephen Graham is a great actor, and this episode was such an amazing and heart wrenching watch. Every scene in the van was destroying. I’m happy that Jamie decided to plead guilty, he just reallly pisses me off.
That ending was perfect.
