> “***life is nothing**. just let it go without really thinking about it. like you're letting go of a... a piece of string. just let it.*.. *it’s not that big of a deal.*” > > “*you’re gonna miss life because you're married to it*.” if i had a nickel for every film i’ve watched about a dysfunctional family trying to make ends meet by scamming and attempting to pull off heists, i’d have two. which isn't a lot but it's weird that it’s happened twice ;ppp insane film holyyyyyy how does one’s mind conjure up such a brilliant story like this?! the humanity of old dolio ughh i can't believe i'll say my fav scene is the breast crawling on a parking lot. the dancing drenched in a pool of gold sunlight is soooo cathartic to me too! i can't even count how many tears i've shed through and through this film (i kid u not i sobbed everytime old dolio was up that screen GAH). everything about this is just perfect. it's whimsical and strange and unique <333 i love that their family aren't really bad people (and not portrayed as so!), that they're not inherently selfish despite using old dolio as a means to an end, they're simply just too busy surviving. we constantly get a glimpse of how she is perceived through her mother's eyes, emphasized even more when melanie came into frame — a striking constrast of old dolio; a reminder of everything she is not. she is disregarded and brushed off, mutilated of the capacity to feel, to be human (*“she has tender feelings. you wouldn't know anything about that. i know“*). we then see the deep cut and confusion in her face when she sees that she's not really seen. even before we get to truly understand the weight of their family's hurt, in the massage scene, we see her flinch away from the massager’s touch, because human connection even in the form of the faintest contact of skin to skin is unfamiliar enough to scare her away, in spite of her desperate longing to be cradled gently and soothed comfortingly (we see her cry of frustration and tremble in fear because of the war inside herself, torn between the choice of wanting but also unable to help herself reject intimacy). we know she didn't grow up in soft cradles, but the longing gnaws and ultimately drives her curiosity further to uncover the mystery of a mother's touch (attending the classes, observing and watching with keen interest, asking her mother *"did i crawl up or, was i put on the cot?"*). but this is not to say that her mother is evil for depriving her of such thing. when his father explained that it would be unfair to treat her as a child and the outburst when she asked her mother to call her hon (*“you want us to be false, fakey people“*), we get to understand that it had never been about the conscious choice of deprivation, it had always been that they have no room for such when they were in a constant state of survival; of devising plans and scheming their way through life, or otherwise there would be no life. although in the end, i genuinely thought that the effort they exerted in an attempt to change the course of things meant they still could begin again, but we are ultimately snapped back into the reality that what they are is something that can hardly be helped. but old dolio has newfound hope, through melanie, that life might still have something to offer her. with pancakes and dancing and melanie, her life might no longer mean nothing.

counter started sounding alive today so i had to revisit...

barely remember anything from this franchise and they really reinforced my belief with this bcs again, easily forgettable (repackaged) plot. but for the love of the game, movies like these are always very very fun to watch in a theater packed with younger gen (and next to a sister who is absurdly easily spooked HAKAKSHSKSKDJ I LOVEEE). the rollercoaster ride my fav cheap local theater went through was INSANE JAJSKDHHSDKAH they made the experience a hundred times better! overall very fun experience but plot-wise, getting old and boring smhh i feel like the horror had so much potential and that they could've expanded the plot (if there was any of it left). still, this is something that could've been worth your time watching in the comforts of your home with your friends and/or families for the funsies nd squeals (unless your cinema is as silly nd lucky as mine LELSSS).
