Garden State
By the way, it says balls on your face.
Had to revisit this (after like 2 years or so) as I've seen a lot of discussion about how it is just twee indie bullshit lately, likely due to the upcoming reappearance of Scrubs, and whilst I can definitely see where people are coming from, twee indie bullshit from the early 2000s was just on another level.
I feel like it's a very time-and-place movie, if you're in your 30s now and first saw this when you were a teenager still (just about) then there's a good chance you love it. If I saw it for the first time now, I could see it losing its appeal.
For a first film, it's pretty fantastic. It's clear Braff was very much a storyboard kinda guy, he seemed to picture scenes down to small details and made an effort to get them exactly how he'd see them in his head, whilst seeming to not be as focused on how they flowed together. It makes the movie a kinda playlist of scenes or quotes put together in order more than a flowing story, but it works for it.
Obviously, the soundtrack is the stuff of legends. I adore it, such a great selection of songs, excellently used and a great story of how it all came together way under the standard budget, I still listen to it a lot and I love my vinyl. Dying for the anniversary concert to be released on something I can buy.
Casting was pretty fantastic too, you've got her majesty, Jean Smart banging Sheldon, Jackie Hoffman singing Three Times A Lady, Method Man's "hands up if you just saw some titties" bit and Ian Holm (who I assume has it in his contract that he has to be in bed for any extended scenes he does).
I guess the unanswered questions left from this are; was the shirt made of wallpaper or is the wallpaper a cotton/polyester blend? And what kind of selfish arsehole do you have to be to see a man put his infant child to bed and then immediately go directly outside his house boat and yell as loudly as you can down a hole several times?
