Incendies
Another banger from Denis Villanueva.
We seriously should be debating him as one of the best directors of all time. Even with no Dune in his catalog he still has, Sicario (BANG), Prisoners (BANG), and Incendies (BANG). The latter being his greatest film.
The way he weaves these stories together is absolutely masterful! The themes of trauma, family and forgiveness are perfectly displayed I’ve never seen anything like it. Nawal’s story is both tragic and captivating, but her strength is truly incredible and triumphant. The small breadcrumbs shown throughout the film leading up to the reveal make it even more shocking with Villanueva’s writing skills in full display giving the viewer one small piece at a time.
The cinematography is beautiful too, every single shot feels meaningful.
The gasp in this is something I will never forget, made me almost shit my fucking pants.
Absolutely beautiful and horrifying.
