About Time
*“I want to go on a quick little walk.”
About Time*, is quite simply one of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. It is smart, quick, sentimental, and absolutely charming.
There is something in thinking of forever that I think everyone wants to experience. We all have that one day we would go back to if we could, or maybe right a wrong that occurred. Whatever the reason, we all want to re-experience time. Change the way it works and feels and the outcome of it all.
Tim is someone who wants just that. He wants to be perfect, not just to woo Mary, but to achieve his dads own affection. The story may start as a romantic comedy, but over time, it evolves into a very compelling drama, with its father/son dynamic at the heart.
Bill Nighy is fantastic. His character of “The Dad” is immediately classic. He’s mysterious, yet an open book. Charming, but serious. Warm, but with an air of knowing to him. And Tim is just as smartly written. He’s kind, warm, and also immediately classic. The women in their lives are just as good too, with Mary/Mary being a second beating heart to the movie.
People may find this an odd rom/com, but that’s because it truly isn’t. It’s a tale about a boy who misses his father after time has changed too much. It’s about someone who wants to never grow old and stay frozen in vignette after vignette.
I love this film so much. It is one of the most compelling dramas I have ever seen. If you haven’t seen it, it’s about time you change that.
