Kill Bill: Vol. 1
This is a movie that I've seen a few times, and it's probably my favorite Quentin Tarantino movie. The last time I watched it was a year ago on TV, and I remembered enjoying it back then. My opinion of this movie still stands after watching it this past weekend. I still love this movie and it's still my favorite Quentin Tarantino movie.
I love how the movie just jumps into extreme violence by seeing a very bloody Uma Thurman get shot in the head, followed by her fighting the shit out of Vivica A. Fox. Immediately it just shows you what you’re in for, which is a violent bloodfest.
I also love that the movie isn't in order, as it feels like a puzzle to figuring out who The Bride is and who Bill is and why she wants to kill him. Even The Bride's real name is bleeped out, which adds to the mystery of her character.
O-Ren Ishii is one of my favorite movie villains. I just love how she was so calm but also cold-blooded and was willing to kill someone if needed. I think I always related to her when I was young because of her tragic backstory and because of her pride about her Asian heritage. When going over her backstory, I always loved the change to animation and even when I was young, I always thought it was so cool to see anime in Western media.
The final battle between The Bride and Gogo, The Crazy 88s, and O-Ren Ishii is still one of my favorite scenes of all time. This movie doesn't give you any second to breathe, as it's nonstop fighting. I especially love the different shots and angles during the fight, like seeing the zoom-ins on Gogo’s Meteor Hammer to just seeing the silhouettes of The Bride and the Crazy 88s when the lights are turned off. It’s just a nonstop adrenaline rush and you just stay on the edge of your seat, hoping to see The Bride achieve her goal of killing O-Ren.
I really don’t have any negative critiques of the movie, as I think it’s basically perfect as a love letter to martial art films and the 70s exploitation films, and would recommend it to anyone as a lover of both.
