Obsession
I have been wanting to watch this movie so bad ever since I saw the trailer. And at first, I thought that the concept is very simple and is a very “be careful what you wish for” type of movie. And it seemed like a good horror movie, so I decided to check it out, and boy, I was not ready for the type of movie I was about to see.
I’ve been trying to build my tolerance for horror movies and not be so much of a scaredy cat, and I thought I would be able to handle this movie. That was not true at all. This movie was just so eerie and unsettling. I was kept on edge the entire time because I was just scared of seeing what Nikki was going to do next. Even when she wasn’t in certain scenes, I was still scared because I felt like she was going to show up all of a sudden. The fact that the majority of the movie happened at night didn’t help either. I hated not being able to see Nikki’s facial expressions when she was in complete darkness. And even when the camera was on her face, she only had glowing eyes, which made everything even more unsettling. The scene with Bear and Sarah in the car especially got to me. I could barely focus on their conversation because I just knew Nikki was going to show up and was just waiting for it to happen. And even when it did happen, it still took me by surprise. By the time the movie was over, I was trembling for a bit, and it took me a while for my body to stop feeling so tense. I didn’t even realize how tense I had been throughout the entire movie.
Inde Navarette was amazing as Nikki. The way her emotions just change from sweet to scary and back to sweet again is so good. She just has a way of switching between her normal self and her possessed self flawlessly and she doesn’t miss a beat when doing it. Even her facial expressions are so good, like I don’t know how the hell she was able to smile and frown to an extreme extent. Her expressions and mannerisms reminded me of the movie Pearl. Overall, she was so good and I hope to see her in more roles in the future.
Bear is a vile person and a coward. There were multiple times that he could have saved Nikki from the One Wish Willow, but chose not to every time because he truly believed that he could work things out. It’s just insane that he just kept pushing through the increasingly dangerous red flags. Just even hearing the first red flag where she lied about her dad dying, he decides to ignore it and rape her afterwards. It was just so frustrating that he still tried to keep going with the relationship even after hearing that Nikki is suffering just because he loves the idea of her more. I especially got angry after he said to her “What’s so wrong about being with me?” because he cares about his own ego more than Nikki’s wellbeing. Even when he was trying to kill himself he kept hesitating because he still had that small feeling that things could still work. I was getting so frustrated just seeing him be a coward and was relieved when he finally died. It’s upsetting to see that Nikki was just being taken advantage of the entire time.
Ian is a shitty friend to Bear too. He’s not as bad as Bear, but he’s a piece of shit allowing Bear to express his crush on Nikki but didn’t even have the balls to tell him that he’s been hooking up with her the entire time. And when Bear tries to have him help undo the wish, he instead wishes for a million dollars and just shows up to his house talking about his wish actually coming true. He definitely deserved being killed for being a shitty friend. The only people who I truly felt sorry for were Sarah and Nikki. Nikki definitely did not deserve everything that happened to her, and Sarah’s situation was just so heartbreaking because she told her feelings about Bear to him too late, as Nikki was in an extreme state at that point.
Basically, this entire movie could have been fixed if the friend group had an open and honest conversation with each other. There’s no such thing as “the perfect time” to tell someone how you feel about them; if you have feelings for someone, you should just tell them immediately. If Ian was a better person, he should have been a good friend to Bear by telling him that he’s been hooking up with Nikki instead of sabotaging his chances to tell Nikki how he feels about her. If Bear was honest with Nikki from the beginning, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for him. Either Nikki would say that she likes him back, which was unlikely, and if she rejected him, he could probably try a relationship with Sarah since she liked him. If Sarah told Bear how she felt about him sooner, then she probably could have helped Bear get over his feelings about Nikki and start a relationship with her instead.
This movie put me through so much anxiety and emotional turmoil, but I love this movie. This is definitely going to become one of those movies that I will not shut up about for a few days to people. I would definitely watch it again and put myself under the same amount of stress just to see if there are any details that I missed the first time.
