Stop! That! Train!
I’m a diehard fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but I’ve always been very wary when it came to the “acting” part of this show. I hate most of the acting challenges and I don’t think they’re funny at all. So when I found out that World of Wonder studios was making a movie, I got really nervous because I thought it was going to be really bad and really unfunny. It also didn’t help that before the movie came out, there were already discussions about AI use in this movie. So I was a little hesitant seeing this movie in theaters.
This movie is definitely an homage to disaster movies, like Airplane! However, usually with these types of movies who try to recreate or pay homage to these disaster movies, it’s usually bad or not funny. This is not the case. What I loved about this movie is that it didn’t feel like it was ripping off Airplane! or other disaster movies. This might be a little bit biased because I was just so disappointed after watching Scary Movie, so watching this movie felt so refreshing. What I loved was that the jokes were simple but just so goofy and silly that they worked. Of course, not every joke landed for me, and that’s okay, because 10 more jokes came after that were funny to me. Honestly, I can’t even remember the last time I laughed this hard in the movie theaters. What also helps is that this movie has a supporting cast of really funny people. They’re all comedians that I love, so I knew that I was going to have a good time seeing them on screen. And I loved that they’re just playing typical people you would see on the train or on the plane in a very exaggerated manner. People might think that’s one note, but isn’t that the case with every character in disaster movies?
What I also loved about that movie is that the majority of main and supporting characters were drag queens. Yes, we have a couple of movies centered on drag queens, but I feel like there weren't really any major movies that I could think about where the main and supporting characters are played by actual drag queens. And I liked that it’s not even part of the plot at all and they’re just being regular people. And I feel like we need more of that, because usually when a movie has a drag queen casted, they’re usually a cameo or a one-off role as a side character, so it’s nice to see drag queens front and center for once. And Ginger Minj and Jujubee killed it as Tess and DeeDee. They made their characters so likeable and they did such a good job with balancing comedy with the warm-heartedness of their friendship.
I just want to say for the record that I don’t condone the use of AI in the media. But maybe I’m just blind, or I'm probably just a dumb bitch, but I couldn’t tell which parts of the movie had AI. If you would have told me that AI was used in this movie, I wouldn’t be able to tell, because the scenes were so rapid that I couldn’t even stop to think if AI was used in the scene or not. I’m still docking off half a star for the AI usage though, since it would have been just fine as it is if it was regular people editing this movie.
Even if you’re not a Drag Race fan, I still think this movie is quite enjoyable. It’s not just a comedy movie, but it’s a comedy movie with heart, and I feel like that’s missing nowadays when it comes to movies in general. I think when it comes to bringing back comedy movies, people just need to go back to basics with just having silly, goofy jokes so that it would make everyone laugh. I enjoyed this movie way more than I expected and I think it will easily become one of my favorite movies of this year so far.
