Starting with the Dark Knight Trilogy is a great place to start. Best to get introduced to Batman and his origins as earlier as possible.
Batman is only one half of DCs greatest duo. The original Superman is probably the single most influential super hero film. It's a must watch for historical reasons. It's also just a great movie. The film is part of four Christopher Reeve led Superman movies, but only the first two are truly worth watching.
Superman 2 does have an alternate cut from the original director, Richard Donner, before he was fired. In 2006, he went back to gather what he had and make a cut closest to what he envisioned. It's still recommended watching the theatrical cut first because the Donner cut is sorta incomplete.
Man of Steel starts the DCEU. DC & Warner Bros. wanted their own MCU and so they started theirs with Man of Steel, a modern retelling of Supermans origin. You can especially tell how much they wanted to catch up with Marvel with Batman v Superman.
From here, you can either continue to Zack Snyders final DCEU movie, or you can take a detour. I'd recommend the detour to a couple films. Wonder Woman and Aquaman fully introduce the characters and showcase their origin. They're both pretty good, solid films. Zack Snyder also had some involvement in both(especially Wonder Woman).
You could stop the DCEU watch through with Justice League, but there's two other DCEU films I'd recommend. Both are stand alone.
A DCEU film, but some added context is needed. So, James Gunn(Guardians of the Galaxy movies, and now Superman), directed this film. And since he took over as the lead creative force for the DC studios, he(along with Peter Safran, who's co-CEO) decided on a creative reboot, basically starting over. The DCEU hadn't had a successful project in years, and it honestly didn't look like it was building to anything major since 2017(it was 2022-2023 at the time when James Gunn got the offer). Anyhow, instead of completely wiping the slate clean, Gunn kept a little from his first DC film outing, keeping several characters like Peacemaker and Rick Flagg. Before DC had rebooted, it's important to mention that Gunn wrote and created a season of television for the Peacemaker character introduced in The Suicide Squad. When season 2 came around, he basically retconned Peacemaker into having always been in the DCU. Gunns explanation was that nothing from the previous film is canon bar any detail that is mentioned in future projects already set in the DCU. Think of it like this, maybe the exact events of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker season 1 happened. They just happened slightly differently to the DCEU version, if that makes sense. Overall, a mistake in my opinion. It's too confusing for general audiences.
Official start of the DCU. For all that continuity confusion, Superman is still a good jumping on point. What probably adds to the confusion is the decision to have the film be set in a world where super heroes are already established. Characters like Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Mr Terrific are already in the movie. Heroes like Batman, Hal Jordan(another Green Lantern), etc exist already too, all before Superman takes place. One last thing to mention. The same year Superman came out, DC came out with the animated show Creature Commandos. It's getting picked up for a second season, but I wouldn't worry about watching it as for now. I don't think that it's going hold much importance. We'll have to wait and see of course.
It's part sequel to Superman(2025). The film's said to be more of an ensemble. Also, the previously mentioned Peacemaker season 2(moreso the finale episode) seems to be having a big impact toward the film. The show Lanterns, releasing summer 2026, looks to be in the same place too. Both shows are probably worth watching for that reason alone.
The first project of Matt Reeves "Epic Crime Saga". In 2022, Matt Reeves(Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and its sequel), came out with the The Batman, a completely new and fresh take on the character. The movies and show are stand alone and don't connect to any other DC project. So, pretty much like The Dark Knight trilogy.
This 8 episode miniseries is phenomenal. It follows up on the side character of the same name. It's said by Matt Reeves that The Penguin will only have a small role in The Batmans sequel, and so this show may not be as important as of yet. But it's still a must watch.
The second major super hero film. Tim Burtons Batman duology(1989 & Returns) of films are absolute classics, being among the most historically important to the genre.
Each film here on out is stand alone and can be watched whenever. Mask of the Phantasm specifically is a great animated Batman film. It released theatrically in 1993, a year after Batman The Animated Series(of which it's connected to) premiered. Mask of the Phantasm is a great on ramp for that show btw. It's a Top 3 portrayal of Batman.
