Chime feels like something evil. Ghosts haunt the corners of the frame, just out of view. The world outside is borderline apocalyptic: empty, lonely, and gray. Most importantly, though, is that there’s something truly terrible brewing inside of everyone. Didn’t love this one the first time I watched it. I respected the craft but didn’t take too much from it. The second viewing was much better, and I find myself feeling so much more than I originally did. Chime isn’t Cure and it isn’t Pulse. It is abstract paranoia, frustration, and violence slowly growing and growing until it becomes too big to ignore. Much less about plot, far more about feeling. Rewatched for week 5 of Summer Cinema Showdown (movies with a small cast). Nobody really does it like Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

This shit crushed me when I first saw it 5-6 years ago and here I am, crushed, once again.

Pleasantly surprised and completely shocked to find out that this was composed by Shadow of the Colossus’ composer. Movie was good too, I guess.
