Prisoners
Coming right off of Deadpool and Wolverine, it was weird seeing Hugh Jackman not running around in a yellow suit.
Prisoners was a movie I was sold on in the first ten minutes. From that point on, my ass was planted firmly in my chair and riding out the full runtime. This movie is SUSPENSEFUL. It works with tension extremely well, making me actually nervous for what will come on screen next. Will the guy be found and his operation uncovered? Prisoners was particularly interesting in how it handled morality and the extent people will go when pushed to their limits, all in the name of who they love. It loves to play with that moral gray area, all while escalating the drama throughout. An ass clenching watch for sure that had a terrifyingly realistic story. Excellent dialogue too.
There were certain aspects of this movie that just weren't explored and swept by the wayside however. These aspects seemed to just be there to create discomforting imagery but didn't really serve much else to the story? At one point I thought they would contribute to the overall mystery, but the film just resolved without addressing it. It was kind of written off as crazy cult stuff, but nothing more significant.
Prisoners is a film that shines on its great writing and buttthumping drama. The two star actors give great performances that contribute to this. While the cinematography and look of the film is pretty bleak imo, it works with the film's tone overall. Definitely recommend.
