Soul
A downright life altering film. I watched this a year after it came out. From then to now, I'm in an entirely different headspace. I think I didn't appreciate this film back then, but I certainly do now.
Soul, in all its creative Pixar-polished beauty, seems to take a defiant step forward in the fruitless fight to finding the meaning to life. I loved how it explored humanity's purpose within the bounds of a passionate artist.
Soul takes the concept of a given birthright purpose and flips it upside down. It points out the obsession we all have with finding our "thing," our "purpose," but then it asks, "well, what then?" What happens when you achieve everything you think you've wanted? What are you left with? To which the film responds: "everything." The mundane, the finer things. Things you left behind while pursuing what you thought was the "big thing." There is an inherent beauty and meaning in living, whether you find your "passion" or not. And in our increasingly doomy, gloomy, nihilistic world many of us find ourselves in, I find this sentiment to be a pretty nifty little reminder.
I just want to add that the other day I found myself sitting in my car after purchasing a Cane's 4 piece box combo (no slaw extra toast). I parked in a nearby outlet mall lot, put the seat back, pulled up a Minecraft video on my phone, and housed that meal while simultaneously enjoying this guy play the funny block game. Afterwards, I wiped my greasy phalanges off with the branded napkins, put the car in drive, placed my hands on the steering wheel and muttered to myself: "life is worth living." And you know, I think that's what ts is all about.
