Superman
James Gunn has done it again! When I heard his name attached to this project I knew it would be good. How good? Let's find out.
There's some discourse about this film.
#SuperWoke!!??? The villain is an evil billionaire, Superman's an immigrant (always was), and there's government funded proxy wars. Gunn's Superman comes at a fucking crazy time in US politics.
Nonetheless, this was so awesome. The action scenes were a blast to watch, complemented by noticeably meaty sound design. The CGI, music (Superman theme ), acting performances -
all so great. Superman is just a guy in this one, and not as stoic.
Despite how fun it was to watch Lex Luthor crash outs and CGI metahuman mayhem, as much as I wanted to, I didn't LOVE it. And I have yet to figure out why. I think something was lost on me. Maybe the overall messaging felt too
hollow, or the narrative was so wild it broke my brain. Gunn's humor is also not for everyone. It does get tiring. They must've thought, "wait, kids are gonna watch this one too. It's Superman," when writing this for adults.
