This movie made me miss people I’ve never even met and a couple I wish I never had.
Falling in love with someone’s voice shouldn’t hurt this much. Spike Jonze takes this odd idea of dating an OS and makes it feel way too real like uncomfortably, “why do I relate to this” real. It’s not really about technology or AI. It’s about how lonely people can get, how love changes over time, and how we cling to feelings long after the person attached to them is gone.
Joaquin Phoenix doesn’t just play a guy in love, he’s basically a slowmotion breakdown in human form. Every awkward pause and half smile feels like a punch of nostalgia for moments you wish you could live again. Scarlett Johansson’s voice somehow feels more alive than most people you meet in real life, and that’s exactly why it hurts.
By the time its over, it’s not the loud, ugly kind of sad. It’s that quiet emptiness where you realize some people were never really yours to keep and yet they leave marks you can’t get rid of.
A love story this good doesn’t make you want what they have. It makes you wonder if you ever really had it at all.. and maybe it’s better I don’t think too hard about that before bed.
