Before Midnight
It’s fascinating that women seem to be on this developmental trajectory where most of them realize late in life that everything they thought was life before was them just fulfilling the role of being something to someone. Celine is such a beautifully tragic character and the way she depicts femininity and motherhood as something that was expected of her, that she had no say in and that ultimately converged her life reminded me so much of the many great women I know that faced a similar fate. As Jessie grew older his life seemingly diverged, and he found romance in everything, whereas for Celine it seemed to be the opposite — her saying she does not love him anymore was alike her admitting to him and largely herself that she is no longer the girl who could see life through rose colored glasses and love him despite their predetermined inequalities. I love this film and the way it depicted such a natural progression of life and love and death. Most remarkable.
