Fallen Angels
Randomly picked.
(First of all, He Zhiwu was very funny, the actor nailed his character)
This film is blessed because of the cinematography, color usage, settings etc but there's way more than that. Before writing about the characters and the message of the theme I'd like to show the playground first.
The film uses a certain philosophical view at life - nihilism, which has many forms in the film. At first, the camera work, and everything that it surrounds are for the character. Every angle is an intim closeup of them, and their surroundings, which mostly extends their inner psyche. Every scene expect the last one are always set in the nigth, which could explain why everything feels like a damp, intim fantasy. Humans tend to lose their "fabricated - ego-ish" selfs towards the end of the day - it's called ego depleiton, as of it's the product of the ego being depleited. The more there's to control, it's more likely to get out of control (Aristotle said something about it too - mesotes/μeσότης)
Wong was a hitman, which is ultimately shows his nihilistic world view, but there's more to it. He stated that he's lazy and don't supports the idea of making decesions himself, but near his end he wanted suddenly a change. A calm and cozy life as a restaurant owner, he even had a casual speaking with a guy even though he was reluctant to speak with his former classmate.
The agent didn't wanted to meet with Wong because of her expectations and she formed a parasocial bond with Wong. She probably struggles to form real bonds with men because of her high expectations. At the end of the day she still longs for a sexual relationship.
The mute guy as a whole was a bit strange for me to pinpoint him in the theme. He was oblivious and dumb, but his lack of intelligence made him an anti-thesis of some sort - because he had an optimistic nihilistic world view. He was detached from the world and himself, maybe that's why he always sneaked into shops and acting like he is the boss, but after meeting with Charlie he stopped doing that and worked for a dead-beat dad. He wasn't a great family man, he's just left his family for good and sent them videos of himself talking to them, but Mr.Mute approached this topic in a different way. I'm not sure about what he wanted, probably maternal care, because he seemed to stuck with woman very easily.
Blondie was probably a prostitute, but she doesn't seemed like a complex character for me, she's just wanted company, and a real relationship with someone.
All of the characters wanted something but at the end no one got what they had wanted.
Wong couldn't get a normal life, The Agent got rejected and Wong ended their "relationship" suddenly, leaving the agent unanwsered, which probably hurt her ego, Mute guy got rejected, Blondie got rejected.
At the end, Mute guy guy and the agent got out of the nigth sligthly "unharmed".
Optimistic nihilism as an anti-thesis won, againts pessimistic nihilism because they've got out of their cycles.
I'd like to apologize for this analysis because I was just writing on a quick whim after watching it.
Good film
