Vertigo
Randomly picked.
Firstly I'd like to mentiom the colors and cinematography because both of them were ahead of it's time, the wide shots with dreamy and dump colors felt like a fever dream. I think glossy is the right word to describe the atmosphere.
Secondly for the theme - I have a bit different read on the theme, and the symbolism adds to it.
The theme for me represented amd showed how one sided affection can mess up everything in one's mind. I'd like to twist John Locke's thought experiment of how everyone percieve's the color blue. It's the same as love, almost everybody has a sense of what they would like to get from another person(of course in a nutshell), but that certain and personal affection doesn't equals always to another person, and still people still want affection no matter what, whether they just simply naive or doesn't care whether the another person would give back the same or not. There are examples where in a couple, both partners seek unequal affection from each other - I'd call this assymetric affection.
Every major character in this film had/has assymetric affection.
John seeks the same environment that Madeline provided him, and in the end it ended up as an obsession. He seeked woman affection and care, or even attention - that's why he kept fooling Midge all the time.
Midge, were already felt love for John from the beginning. She had enough time to dwell on John's affair to deduce it by herself. She even tried to impress him through a cringe and awkward painting. Maybe John passively forced his presence on her and after a while she started to cling onto him.
Madeline fell in love with John almost at the same time, amd after changing her name to Judy, she stated that a blind date isn't an unheard thing for her. I think she didn't lied because that would explain the sudden affection towards John. Her deeper and more deprived fixation on herself as a person started at her relationship with Gavin after she found out her similarity with Gavin's wife. At the end, John fell in love with the idea of Madeline the wife instead with the person, Judy. She still showed affection towards John even though she didn't liked John's obsession with similarities.
Both the three of them obsessed through assymetric affection.
If the center of the spiral is love itself, then every line that runs towards to it is the people who has assymetric affection.
Very good film
