X-Men: First Class
‘Let’s just say I’m Frankenstein’s monster. And I’m looking for my creator’
‘I’ve been at the mercy of men just following orders. Never again’
I love this film. The first hour is genuinely peak. The pacing is so quick but nothing really feels rushed. The 60’s aesthetic and action is great. And the characters are interesting and well written.
It’s got some problems. The younger mutants are kinda just there and besides some fun scenes, they don’t really add a lot besides being ‘Professor X’s first students.’ And the villains aren’t necessarily bad but two of them don’t talk and Shaw’s and Emma’s intentions just feel a bit, I dunno, basic? They’re also just a repeat of Magneto and Mystique from the previous trilogy. Again, they’re not awful I just wouldn’t say they’re great villains. And killing the only character that can’t die is probably the stupidest film decision ever.
Charles is so much more interesting and entertaining than he is in the original trilogy. He’s a lot of fun in this film and the start of his relationship with Magneto is done brilliantly. Speaking of, Magneto is pretty much done perfectly. His theme is so good and scenes like his origins, the tooth, the Argentinian bar, tbf pretty much any scene he’s in, perfect. It’s difficult to match Ian Mckellen’s presence but Michael Fassbender does and maybe even more so.
It’s just a very enjoyable film with many cool moments.
