Hereditary
Jesus this movie shakes me to my core. My toes curl in anxiety and I bite my knuckle. This movie actually makes me feel so uncomfortable for so many reasons and that impresses me. Firstly the depression and grief and loneliness and isolation cut to the core. That much death so suddenly and no chance to process the feelings. It’s truly a gut punch of a movie. The way Annie begins to isolate herself and fall in to a questioning guilt just for her daughter to die and pull her in to a somehow manic and depressive episode. It’s insane. But the fear continues in the absolutely disgusting scenes and themes. The satanism and such is something we brush off as people as myth but it is truly scary. But for me this movie is built on two forms of horror. Disgust and anxiety. The disgust comes through the ants and through the piano wire for me. The scene of Peter’s face sleeping just consumed with ants makes me sick, and the piano wire scene makes me want to throw up and run away at the same time. The damn sound of it. On the flip side the dead silence and the hold of the scenes creates an intense anxiety. There’s no push for a jump scare, the silence and hold does enough. It creates dread beyond belief. And don’t get me started on the acting and direction. Insane performances all around, literally all around. And the direction was incredible, the shots through the tiny sets and the flipping camera. The camera holds and the open spaces created. Plus an amazing set. This is perfect elevated horror, love this movie and hate this movie for how much it can scare me. I was actually acting like a 10 year old before the imax screening saying I didn’t want to go. No other movie can do that to me. click
“I never wanted to be your mother.”
“You didn’t kill her, Annie. She’s still here.”
