Yeah still slaps on a rewatch, still scared me a few times too. I am a massive fan. This is just pure suburban, modern, grounded (to me at least) horror. It takes horror tropes and runs with them, doing the most basic things in the most perfect way. Subverting some things, I mean some of the scares got me by letting me relax for a brief second and then hitting me with the ultimate punch. The scare when Justine is in bed and she rests her head for the ceiling jump scare is so great, it scares you, then makes tension with the noise in the house, and then finally lets you relax just for the true scare to come. I love it. I think this movie just plays horror perfectly, mixes in some comedy, and an honest to god very interesting story. I love the perspective changes, it’s a different vibe with different characters. You experience, grief, addiction, guilt, and so much more. I think this movie is great flat-out. I’m excited to revisit it in say a year or two when the scares aren’t as fresh, but I know some of them are engraved. I mean shit the forks?? When Marcus first starts running up??! How can you clear your mind of those, I love the direction, the acting, the story, the cinematography, I honestly have no complaints.
I’ve come back to write a bit more. This movie is meaningful, there’s so much trauma involved. There’s lots of ways to view it, school shootings leaving a community with a sense of dread and disappearance. Addiction and the gap it leaves in everyone’s lives. And the most important in my opinion, childhood trauma and living within the moments of it. Alex is absolutely suffering. He is suffering intense trauma and he can’t tell a soul because he’s worried about the repercussions. So many kids are suffering in the exact same way. No, there’s not a witch threatening their parents. But say alcoholism or drug abuse by the parents, telling someone about that suffering as it falls on the child might mean for the child that their parents disappear, that they are taken away. Alex soldiers on. He takes his trauma with him everywhere and holds it in, like so many people have done. Having to act normal in a far from normal situation. It hurts.
“This is a true story that happened in my town. So this one Wednesday is like a normal day for the whole school, but today was different. Every other class had all their kids, but Mrs. Gandy's room was totally empty. And do you know why? Because the night before, at 2:17 in the morning, every kid woke up, got out of bed, walked downstairs, and into the dark... and they never came back.”
“I’m phobic.”
“I found you.”
