Blade Runner 2049
Roger Deakins' cinematography makes for literal paintings, and the inclusion of Zimmer & Wallfisch's dominant score, the set design intricacy, and next-gen visual effects will make sure this film lives on for decades.
Narratively, Blade Runner 2049 connects seamlessly with Blade Runner as a meaningful sequel that does more than revisit the story; it contributes an entirely new fold that adds symbolic purpose, world-building, and depth to what had already been previously understood.
The character of Constant K is completely representative of identity and emotional vulnerability, and the moments where we see him take abuse or question his being are what really make this movie. It's no mistake that the only time we see K come to terms with his existence is on the steps of the Stelline Laboratory, broken but with a final sense of melancholic fulfillment.
I can confidently say that Blade Runner 2049 is the best sci-fi film yet. From pleasantries found in secondary characters such as Dr. Ana, the exploratory concept of the Replicant and AI relationship (K and Joi), the cyberpunkish beauty of the Joi and Mariette sync, or the vast and bleak atmosphere of a not too distant Los Angeles, this one has it all.
