So perfectly shot that every frame could be turned into a painting, disgustingly gothic and unsettling and icky and haunting in the best way possible and amazing acting (Lily Rose seriously killed it). Wasn’t entirely sure on the pacing, mainly the last third feeling quite condensed and abrupt, but the dreamlike feeling of Thomas being transported to the castle and then the unnerving nightmarish reality he was in once there was perfect. Appreciated a lot of the commentary and themes; Thomas and Friedrich envying each other for what the other has, Ellen not being listened to and being physically restrained/silenced by groups of men and following from that the theme of loneliness, longing for things/people/places to fill spaces inside you/your life (reoccurring in so many of his films) were so well constructed and subtly increased as the movie went on.
