Landscapers
‘What’s the difference between being here and somewhere else in my head?’
Olivia Colman obliterated her role to the absoloute max, making me honestly believe that if she wasn’t apart of this project - it wouldn’t have been as entertaining as it was. Overall, it’s a enthralling viewing experince due to the experimentalist and surrealist approach the creators take to a simple true crime thriller. It uses colour, sets and very meta settings to create a story about the psyche of guilt and murder rather than being rooted in realism. Although this element is a huge pro, it’s also its biggest disappointment as it makes the narrative incoherent. There was an acceptable amount of surrealism employed to tell the story of the Edwards but the finale especially utilises extremely abstract concepts that don’t really compliment the show at all. It alters the amount of audience investment within the story as there is a lack of emotional depth to these techniques. However, as a television programme it’s incredible to see what the medium is now capable with, especially on such mainstream channels.
