Adolescence
um-? holy FUCK.
this was acted so well it’s actually insane. and the one shot episodes? flawless. the story- genuinely terrifies like…. wtf. give stephen graham and owen cooper fucking awards right now.
i was just scrolling on tiktok and saw so many comments about how the show ‘demonises men’ and it’s ‘propaganda’, ‘it’s just a show, it’s all fake’, ‘the reviews are just from women who are now scared’ (i mean fuck yeah im scared as a teenage girl and i have every reason to be.) and i just- THOSE COMMENTS JUST SHOW THAT YOU MISSED THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE SHOW!! it’s not about making all men the villains. it’s about showing the unfortunate and honestly TRUE effect of the internet and how it indoctrinates boys, literal CHILDREN into misogyny from people like Andrew fucking Tate. The fact that misogyny is so normalised in society and among young boys genuinely just upsets and scares me. and the fact that Jamie said he was ‘better’ because he didn’t touch Katie, that he could have ‘touched any part of her’ but didn’t. that ‘most boys would have touched her, but [he] didn’t. so that makes [him] better, don’t you think?’ it’s actually haunting to hear those words come out of a THIRTEEN year old boy’s mouth. and yeah, it’s a TV show. but READ THE NEWS. it’s really fucking scary as a sixteen year old girl to watch the news and see all this happening, hearing stories almost identical to that portrayed in the show. and not to mention how Jamie was trying to downplay/justify his actions (without explicitly saying he killed Katie of course until the end where he slipped.) On a side note the way his character changed from terrified and scared in episode 1 and in the first twenty minutes I was like no way a kid could do that- to episode three where he was so misogynistic, manipulative and downright terrifying. (I mean, owen cooper.. get a fuckin award. the acting was insane). but it haunts me the fact that all this shit happens. in real life. this is the world we fucking live in.
in terms of the show itself - i lovedd the one take episodes it felt like i was there. and the acting was genuinely amazing. um.. the ending made me want to cry the parents (esp the dad) just blaming themselves “I’m sorry son. I should’ve done better.” broke meeeeee!!!!! Like the fact that they’ll spend the rest of their lives blaming themselves for their son’s actions, like no, of course they had no idea what he was doing on that computer. give stephen graham and award RIGHT NOW!!!
Final note - the one thing that was missing, and i do hope that if there’s another season/part they actually go into this- is about Katie. when the female detective in episode 2 said how it’s sad that in cases like these, the perpetrator is always the centre and the victim is always forgotten/blamed, and whilst this is so heartbreakingly true in real life i do wish they showed the aftermath of Katie’s death as well, since all we got was the effect it had on her friend, Jade. I get that it proves the point the detective made that the show centers around Jamie and his family but i’d appreciate something about Katie too - since the only proper information we get about her is that from Jamie himself… and i can just say that’s not gonna be the best perspective to make assumptions from.
ok. wasn’t planning on writing an essay review and there’s a lot more I could say but it’s late af and i have school tmr so adios
