Opening Night
what a masterpiece. such a complex story told in a way that is emotionally raw and so incredibly beautiful. Gena Rowlands' acting in this film is truly unbelievable, so big thank you to John Cassavetes for creating characters that would show how talented Gena was.
aging is a stigmatised concept in society, and many people fear growing older. Opening Night articulates this fear effectively. although aging triggers Myrtle's inner-turmoil, her struggles stem from how society perceives aging rather than the process itself. playing a character who is over 40 is difficult for Myrtle, as it mirrors the way women are treated in show business when they hit a certain age. furthermore, her refusal to play the role as written reflects how deeply she struggles to accept her own age.
the death of Nancy has severely impacted Myrtle and is another factor that causes her unraveling. Nancy represents everything Myrtle is losing, each interaction blurs the line between hallucination and reality. Myrtle's identity is fractured, instead of confronting her grief, guilt, and fears she projects them onto Nancy. essentially, Nancy is not a character but a symbol of a society obsessed with youth that Myrtle can no longer appease.
Myrtle's resistance to the script reflects her desire for more authentic and emotionally honest work. instead of conforming to the bleak and limited expectations of women, particularly middle-aged women in film and society, Myrtle redefines her role. her improvisations and breakdowns during rehearsals reflect a deeper existential crisis, as she cannot reconcile her lived identity with the one society expects her to perform.
i thought this film was quite similar to Black Swan, particularly with the identity crisis part when it comes to playing these characters. both characters face an immense pressure to perform and they lose themselves while becoming the character. however, these two films are very different from that of the other and have different focuses.
need to mention how brilliant the comedy is, it brought a certain light and personality to the characters. also Myrtle's wardrobe is amazing, love the pair of sunglasses she wears. such a perfect film, love it.
