American Psycho
This movie is so good (though most of the credit goes to Brett Easton Ellis). The first time I watched this movie, I believed everything Patrick Bateman says, and the movie was about the eventual murderous unraveling of capitalism. Now I realize he’s performing everything. Even performing his lack of emotionality. He tells us he’s dead inside and there’s nothing there over and over, yet he is so full of his own ego. His contradiction of obsessing over himself leads to viewing everything as an attack (look at his murderous impulse over someone’s superior business card, the dry cleaners, the ease of getting a dinner reservation). Obviously he is the embodiment of capitalism and my initial reading of the film was not far off, but the iceberg runs so much deeper. I won’t go into all the details, but there’s so much to mine and I’m living for it.
