‘that’s also the hard part: growing without growing apart or changing without it scaring the other person.’
this film took me a little bit to get in to - the first half i found just kind of throws you in and shows you every embarassing part of theodore. but i think i came to realise theres a point to that because it makes the audience uncomfortable. we are watching this man who lives alone and is not entirely social thus its rare we seem him fold to society or practice restraint - we see him at his most initimate, and that essence of theodore is captured amazingly by phoenix.
what made me more eager to watch the film was his whole monologue on the train about his marriage. ‘changing without scaring the other person’ is the part of my quote in particular that stuck out to me like such a sore thumb. i wish i had seen this film much earlier because it was words like this i needed to hear.
also, i found all the characters in this film so frustrating and that is again truly what makes it such a good film. because you see these flaws most prominently within their relationships. we are not perfect people but, more importantly, we will never be perfect for each other because those we are most intimate with will come to know our flaws best.
the fact that this film is a reality for some people now and they genuinely want to persue relationships with AI…the film shows in this twisted and brilliant way exactly how it will go down. how it will be quickly accepted and the AI will become more human.
thank you jericho for this 2nd movie swap 🥹 a beautiful film and i look forward to the next one hehe..
