Tenet
Don’t try to understand it, feel it
My brain is broken but my soul has never felt so alive.
This is why we watch films. To push the boundaries of the stories that can be told. Stories that through both the visual and auditory landscapes, create a final product where we as the audience can walk away with our lives impacted or changed, even to the smallest scale. That is EVERYTHING that Tenet is to me.
Tenet is everything I love about cinema. A film where we don’t get spoon fed every piece of context and all of the answers. instead we are taken on this journey where The Protagonist’s story unfolds in front of our eyes like a scattered puzzle where we’re disoriented from everything that’s taking place. As the film progresses, the pieces begin to get put together, building up to the climax at the end, serving as the glue that sticks it all together, while still leaving lots up to interpretation.
The final dialogue exchange between Neil and The Protagonist is an all-timer to me. The perfect ending. Just genius writing from one of the best minds in filmmaking. A scene that has not left my mind since the credits rolled, a scene that in itself reflects the whole purpose of this film. The idea of the temporal pincer as mentioned by Neil was not just a plot device. It was also Nolan’s own way of telling the audience of what Tenet is as a film. Tenet IS its own temporal pincer. Neil doesn’t just deliver the line to The Protagonist, but also to us as the audience. He looks us right in the eye as he says You’re only half way there. I’ll see you at the beginning, friendOne viewing was never enough, that was the whole point all along.
