“maybe one day i’ll be in san francisco and maybe you’ll find your san francisco, too.”
this film was such a very sad and heartbreaking one for me because it showed how many gay men were treated back then by the law and also on how they were seen by society which when thinking about it just makes me wanna burst into tears because these men were put into jail simply because they were having relations with other men which is something that shouldn’t get you thrown into jail for because those type of feelings aren’t something that one could control or change and i know that these men were also doing these types of things in public bathrooms and that type of stuff is seen as public indecency which is something that isn’t seen as something good by society but when thinking about it these men had nowhere else to go to meet one another because police was everywhere and always looking to harass gay men so these men’s only kind of way to meet one another was going to these public bathrooms to secretly have sexual relations with other men just like them and when reading on or simply watching films like these on how my community was treated for just having a love for the same gender will never fail at pulling on my heart strings which this one managed to do all the way through especially with us following a cop who is luring and arresting these gay men into these public bathrooms but also has a secret of his own and that’s him also being a gay man himself but we see throughout the whole film of him struggling with his sexuality and how something i really loved about this film was how well the camera work was done in this one especially with how it felt like something straight out of the 90s and how the camera would also get all hazy and foggy to show us how it was affecting the cop and how he was constantly anxious about being found out by others then we see him falling madly in love with one of the men that he lures into the bathroom and we see this man is also struggling to come to terms with his sexuality while having a secret affair with the said cop while he has a family of his own which is sad for both him and the wife because he has to live a life just to conform into society and also the wife who has to be in said relationship with a man who’s lying to himself and doesn’t love her in the exact way that she does him but this is sadly the type of society that we live where queer people are made to be looked at as some disgusting creatures who do nothing but spread diseases and try to “corrupt” the minds of other individuals with their “sickness” that many homophobes love to spew nonstop which isn’t true at all because all queer people want in this world is to be treated like actual human beings who lives also matter just as much as that of heterosexuals and shouldn’t be treated differently just because of their attraction to the same gender and since this film takes place in the 90s you would have thought that things would be a whole lot different for queer people but sadly that isn’t the case because instead of moving forward we are instead going backwards as a country because of our horrible administration but this was still such a well made one and one of the best watches from 2025!
