Lanthimos gives a huge nod to Mary Shelley and allows the audience to relive “Frankenstein’s monster” through Bella. I love her deeply. I adore her sense of childlike wonder, curiosity about the world around her, her sexual liberation, and desire for freedom. I adored her journey and was so proud of her by the end of it I nearly cried. Emma Stone is a gem and to me, this is her at her best. I’m also sincerely hoping that Ruffalo takes best supporting for this role. I was laughing my ass off at his relentless melodrama.

there’s a lot of understandable division in opinion over the male-gaziness elements in this. while i’m choosing to find this story empowering, there’s still the obvious issue of an infant’s brain in the body of a hyper-sexual grown woman, specifically its own mother’s. i found the amount of nudity and sexual exploration to be part of the comedy but i can appreciate why some might find it all to be disturbing. i just don’t happen to agree, but i get it.
