The Sacrifice
Andrei Tarkovsky truly is a master of art or cinema. This is definitely his most philosophical film, with long monologues and rich dialogues. Paired together with fantastic classical music and simply stunning cinematography really makes this a masterpiece.
There are so many underlying themes, hidden meanings and symbolism. It is just impossible to unpack it all at once. The main theme (I think) is the threat of nuclear war and how humanity would cope. How would it make us feel if we knew the end of all we've ever know was near? How would we translate those thoughts into action? I think Tarkovsky knows as no other how to bring the viewer that message, from his own perspective.
It seemed to me like spirituality was also a big part of the film. Although I am a firm believer in science and atheism, I still think it's beautiful how faith was used in The Sacrifice. Together with some supernatural elements and many philosophical conversations, makes this floaty movie pretty heavy on the brain.
Unfortunately, I don't think i watched this film at the right time. I got distracted quite often and just couldn't focus on the movie. But for once, I don't blame the film, but rather myself for not picking a better moment. Altogether this definitely calls for a rewatch on a better day!
