““Banish the fear of death from men's hearts and they would not live a day... If people could see the world for what it truly is, see their lives for what they truly are without dreams and illusions, I don't believe they could offer the first reason why they should not elect to die as soon as possible.”
The dichotomy of optimism which is Powered through one’s faith, and pessimism/nihilism which is influenced through one becoming aware of the futility of life, is presented in a way which makes the audience truly ponder if there’s a gray area in our black and white world.
The two Characters in the movie are named Black and white. Similarly, how they view life seems to fit this motif of black and white. Black is religious and extremely faithful. White is a nihilist of some sorts and is magnificently annoyed by life and the people that surround him. He has become sick of humanity as he sees humanity as nothing but destructive and is only capable of destruction. These two characters debate and argue about their world views, and to them there’s no middle ground, or as to say, there’s no gray area. It’s all either black or it’s white. You either live a life of faith disregarding the futility of life (basically delude yourself into thinking you’re important in this vast universe) or you became so incredibly aware of this meaninglessness and finally declare that you’re ready to give up.
Throughout the movie I could not stop relating to White and his world views. Honestly it’s how I felt since I was 16, and listening to his reasonings, I heard some of my own thoughts roll of his tongue. Idk if I should be concerned about that or not but eh who cares.
In short it’s a very thought provoking, conversation between two sides of humanity. One which deludes itself into thinking they’re the center of the universe and the other which realise their existence is as important as those tiny pockets on those jeans for women.
