Enter the Void
I already knew from Climax that Noé is a sick fuck, but this genuinely took it even further, like how do you even come up with some of this shit. Visually, especially the color grading and cinematography, this is honestly some of the best I've seen this century. The psychedelic experience the film is obviously inspired by genuinely made even me, someone who has never taken psychedelics or any drugs at all, feel like I was having my first trip, especially in the first two thirds, also because of how much meaning and symbolism is packed into the visuals. I really like the core premise of following Oscar from the beginning through his pov and after his consciousness leaves his body. I'm gonna be honest, the writing isn't perfect, you don't really get that strong of a connection with the characters since they're intentionally kept somewhat distant and the brother sister relationship with its incestuous undertones still caught me off guard multiple times. My only real critique is the last third, the psychedelic concept starts feeling a bit repetitive and pushes aside the emotional story, the floating ego perspective drags on without progression while the characters become empty shells and while the gritty, dirty sex scenes are very much part of Noé's style work, the balance just feels a bit off here and it ends up feeling like a bit too much at times rather than fully effective. Even with all of that I still think this film is amazing, I genuinely could not look away and had the same reaction I had with Climax where I felt disgusted uncomfortable and completely mesmerized at the same time. In the end this is an overragend film experience that sticks with you and you definitely come out of it with a strong opinion on it, it's basically impossible to feel nothing about it and I guess that applies to Noé in general.
