Lost Highway
“I like to remember things my own way.”
I’ll be honest: on my first watch, I didn’t really understand what was going on. Still, I loved the film. The atmosphere was strong from the beginning, and the soundtrack added a lot to the experience. Even without fully understanding the story, the mood alone worked for me.
After leaving the cinema, I watched a few explanation videos, and that’s when the film became much clearer. At that point, it really clicked. For me, this is a perfect example of a David Lynch film. It’s difficult to understand at first, but once you start to grasp it, everything comes together and it feels like a masterpiece.
With the background story in mind, I’m sure I’ll enjoy Lost Highway even more on a rewatch. It’s the kind of film that benefits from being seen again.
Fred as a protagonist was interesting from the start and became more engaging as the film progressed. The ending was beautiful and felt exactly right. I honestly can’t imagine a better conclusion for a story like this.
What makes the film special to me is its confusion. That confusion isn’t a flaw, it’s part of what makes the experience so memorable.
Spoiler Start:
In the end u can say as an overview of the film: Lost Highway is about a man who murders his wife and can’t accept his guilt. His mind fractures reality and invents new identities to escape responsibility where pete is the opposite of fred sexually capable and girls want him. alice is more sexually open unlike rennee. The Mystery Man represents his guilt, the videotapes are reality breaking through denial, and Dick Laurent is the violent part of him. The story loops because guilt can’t be erased only avoided.
