The Immigrant
"‘Til now, I never killed nobody before, but it don’t make a difference because if you could lick my heart, you’d taste nothing but poison. See, you think there’s goodness in everybody, but there ain’t!"
James Gray might as well have ripped my chest open with this movie, I immediately fell in love. The dark cynical portrayal of America in the 20s blends perfectly with the cruel experiences immigrants had to endure to go to the country. All the actors are exceptional, especially Marion Cotillard and Joaquin Phoenix. I love the dark romance (or in theory anything but) Ewa and Bruno have. It's abusive, weird, on the edge, but yet there is love. Requited? Probably not. Bruno loves her truthfully even if he doesn't show it conventionally. The story is perfect, immediately setting up what the major plot will be in the first five minutes and it never changes until the very last scene. The ending shot is one of the best I've seen in a film and left me speechless, beautiful. An amazing period piece drama.
