Perfect Blue
Wow holy shit, what a film, what a story, what a twist. This was an absolutely incredible film from start to finish. The story was absolutely amazing. I thought that the regular story of an idol having to deal with her personal life and a stalker was already interesting to start, but the way that Kon does it to the next level is pure fucking genius. Kon leaves you questioning what's real, what really happened, what's really happening? Pretty much makes the audience know as much as Mima in the entire film, absolutely genius. I thought that the whole different life as an idol/actress vs was done so well. You can see the obsession that some weirdos have for these woman, vs what they're actually like. These dudes are in love of the character that they act and not the actual person behind the idol. The way we see Mima battle with this in the beginning was honestly heartbreaking because she has no idea what awful things are ahead for her. Man that fucking scene when she acts as an "entertainer" was fucking hard to watch. I'm surprised that something so graphic, so traumatizing for many people was in a big production like this. I mean holy shit it was one of the most raw and disgusting portayals of an act I've seen. I understand that Kon put this in to show how easily these young aspiring women get taken advantage of in the entertainment industry, but I wonder if it was that necessary to have that scene last minutes.
Holy shit I'm not going to spoil what starts to happen in the second act, but I implore everyone to go in this film as blind as you can when watching for the first time, your mind will be blown.
The animation of this film was fantastic. I am an absolute sucker for 90s grainy 12 fps anime animation. I love the way it looks. The hand drawn asthetic of it shows the absolute hard work that the animators put in. I felt like every frame of Tokyo and Mima's apartment has been posted in one of the "90s anime aesthetic" posts on Instagram, and for good reason.
