The Handmaiden
Holy shit, this was amazing. This being my introduction into Park Chan Wook has me so excited to see his other work. I mean absolute mind fuck of a film in how the storytelling was laid out wow. I'm not going to say anything, but when you think you understand what is happening in the film, it throws an absolute nasty ass Kershaw curve ball at you when you absolutely least expect. I mean wow this script was un fucking real, and I can't speak or understand Korean and can only understand some Japanese. Thats how good of a script Park wrote. My friend Rinsei sent me a reel that said "when the movie is so good you have to watch a ending explained YouTube video" that's how I felt with this film and how mindfucky it was.
Cinematography was amazing too. The way that the camera moved on the dolly, and the way that Park used the camera to show and hide specific small details related to the plot was absolutely genius.
The costumes and set were so fucking beautiful to look at. They absolutely nailed that time period. The way the house looked with the mix of English, Japanese, and Korean architecture all fused together was mesmerizing.
The performances that the actors put on were superb, escspecially from Kim Min-hee (😍my Korean actor crush) & Kim Tae-ri were phenomenal. Kim Min-hee was so good in this film, she really showed what she's capable of, instead of playing the same god damn character like she always does in Hong films. (Too bad she became Hong's mistress and got blacklisted from all Korean acting gigs on non Hong films 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭) The dynamic between the two woman was very well done, and how their relationship played out was enjoyable to see.
It's insane that this was an all Korean cast, and a 1/3 of this film was in Japanese. The spoke great Japanese as I couldn't notice a any brutalized Japanese. They all spoke Japanese elegantly but with a Korean accent.
