Waves
Wow what a emotional ride of a film this was, and god damn did it sound so good too musically, like holy shit.
This is definitely my favorite A24 film I've seen, given I haven't seen many, but this film has set the standard for me for A24 films. I mean like IDK where to begin. The story was so emotional and impactful. You can take so much away from this film and apply it to your daily life and make it better because of this film. I mean holy shit the characters are perfectly written, and the family drama dynamic is played out sooo well. The acting is absolutely phenomenal from everybody, and they give such a believable performance, that you would feel like you would be in the room with them. I love just when you think the film is about to end, it doesn't, I'm not gonna spoil anything but I definitely wasn't expecting the film to continue in the way that it did. I thought that that part of the film was more impactful and powerful than the first, and I think that was the point.
Wow the cinematography is incredible as well. Damn. The constant camera movements at the beginning looked more like videography for a commercial or high quality social media video. Definitely some use of gimble and definitely glidecam. I have never seen a glidecam be used like that. And how TF did they get that rotating shot inside the car at the very beginning. That blew my god damn mind how they might've been able to film that and rig it. The one takes in this film are fucking fantastic as well, the glidecam and how coordinated everything is absolute eye candy. I love how they show Tyler's care free life in the beginning with the constant glidecam/gimble use, then contrast it when he's around his family then when all shit hits the fan. When the shit hits the fan we get a more traditional "cinematic" look to it, but even then the shots still look beautiful. The color of the neon lights during the night is always an easy way to my heart. And God damn when the aspect ratio changes to 4:3 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I first heard about this film when one of my Japanese friends brought it up when I was visiting them last year when we were talking about music. And she told me about this film and how it had such a banger soundtrack with Frank, SZA, Chance and others, and that definitely caught my attention. Now that I've watched it, the soundtrack isn't just a bunch of good ass songs compiled together, the director meticulously uses them at the perfect moments to convey the tone in each scene. When GHOST by one of my all time favorites Kid Cudi started to play, I thought to myself "this is exactly how I would've used this song if I could in a film". The soundtrack of this film is absolutely top fucking tier and put me onto some good new tracks imma be bumping.
Thank you for the recommendation!!
