Sing Sing
Despite the fact that I have no particular Love for theater, this was one of the most touching films of this Oscar season.
Seeing men in difficult situations come together in brotherhood, united by a common passion, ignites a particular sense of joy. Watching the characters in this movie brought about just that. While the raw reality of their situation was clearly conveyed on-screen, it was combated by a strong sense of belonging. Each one of these men, imprisoned for a host of reasons, both illegitimate and legitimate, still experienced the gift of “place.” Each one had a place at the table. Whether they were playing Hamlet or Alotincommon, the particular role didn’t matter so much as having one. It didn’t matter what seat they were sitting in, as long as they were at the table.
Men, regardless of what situation they find themselves in, long for the experiences that these men had. They desire purpose, passion, and a place of belonging. Getting to witness these men find these things, even in the midst of prison, was a beautiful experience. I love true stories like this one.
