Gladiator
98/100 👑 ⚔️
Gladiator is riveting. It explores ideas of duty and honor, family, loyalty, and revenge in its writing. The screenplay was mind-blowing. From the realistic dialogue to the connectable characters to the developed relationships and rivalries, this movie didn’t disappoint in its wonderful script. The performances in this movie enhanced these characters even more, with each cast member perfectly bringing these characters to life. Russel Crowe plays Maximus, a character at the top then, pushed to the bottom. His character grows in the movie, as we learn more about his true identity and witness his capability as a genuine leader. Crowe perfectly embodies this role and captures these characteristics masterfully. Joaquin Phoenix also is outstanding. He plays Commodus, a wicked ruler, that lies to get his way. He is flawed, addicted to power, and doesn’t want anybody to interfere with his rule. Joaquin Phoenix masterfully captures this role through his mannerisms, facial expressions, and his chemistry with other characters on screen. Through build-up, payoff, and intensity, Gladiator is unforgettably intense and enjoyable.
From a technical standpoint, Gladiator is exceptional. Ridley Scott’s creative direction transforms this movie into something new within its genre. It has these epic action set pieces, while also keeping its historical setting very present. The visual elements were some of the best aspects of this film. Cinematographer John Mathieson put extraordinary shots on display. All elements of lighting, framing, and shot configuration are showcased masterfully. The production design was one of the most encapsulating parts of this film. The costumes, sets, and locations all felt real and made me feel like I was in this setting. Likewise, the editing contained rapid cuts, montages, cross-cutting, match cuts, cutaways, jump cuts, inserts, fades, and pacing that emphasized suspense. Overall, Gladiator is a very strong historical action drama. It is epic, intense, and one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
