Logan
96/100 🔪Ⓧ
Logan is a raw exploration of the iconic superhero, Wolverine. Loss, regret, and legacy are among the ideas explored in this movie. The script quality for this movie is unbelievably good. The main characters of this film are well-developed and have distinct motives. Plot-wise, it isn’t the most clever or creative ever, but the small-scale and character-driven aspects of the story enhanced the experience. The antagonists may be basic and the exposition may feel flatly expressed, but the wonderfully written dialogue and well-developed characters make those flaws a little less noticeable. These characters have chemistry, distinct personalities, intensity, accessibility, and actors who know how to bring these roles to life. Therefore, Logan is way too heartfelt to ignore.
On a technical level, Logan tackles a wide range of tones and cinematic styles. The visuals emphasize drama through shifting, distance, structure, angles, and lighting. Editing-wise, it showcases a slow pace that strongly builds up to something epic and exciting. From chase scenes to intense action sequences to lashouts, this film doesn’t fail to disappoint. Sonically, Logan strengthens different genre elements through distortions, combat, and more. The score and soundtrack bring a Western element to the film with its use of harmonicas, banjos, and Johnny Cash songs. The production design was flawless in Logan. The sets were amazing. The rural locations and dilapidated buildings enchance the Western and dystopian aesthetic that this film contains. The vicious effects improve the action sequences by giving them a more visceral appearance. Overall, Logan is a beautiful send-off to one of the best comic book characters of all time. It is dark, gritty, and violent, but it is also thematically mature and solidifies itself as a masterful piece of comic book movie history.
