Up
Up is a masterpiece of a movie. Somehow I only watched it for the first time recently but thank god I did because this is a piece of film that can’t be missed. It is a ton of fun and a great watch for kids but also has every bit of emotion and weight that allows even the most critical of people to enjoy it.From the beginning Up begins on a high note with a scene of such deep emotion while barely having any bits of dialogue. It sets up scene perfectly for the change Carl will be forced to make throughout the movie, starting him at a huge low. But unlike what some people say the quality of the movie doesn’t go down from their and stays at a high for the entire rest of the movie.
Pros:-Although there aren’t many, the characters in this movie are absolutely amazing! They carry the story on their shoulders and go through tremendous growth. Carl has the best character arc, after losing Ellie he is at the lowest of lows. Throughout the movie he has to learn to deal with the loss of her and move on “going on a new adventure”. Russel as well is great and although he doesn’t go through nearly as big of a change he is the moral compass that guides Carl through his struggles and eventually forces him to change. The side characters are fun as well delivering some good comedic moments, and although not the greatest, Charles Muntz is a villain with pretty good motivations and doesn’t feel shoehorned in.-The soundtrack in Up elevates the conveyed emotion in every scene, making every sad scene even more devastating, and every happy moment even more joyful. It’s also really catchy and easy to listen to which is hard for a lot of movies to pull off.-Of course this is an animated movie made by Pixar so the animation has to be talked about, and wow is it stellar. It looks so realistic while keeping a cartoon like style, and some of the backgrounds and locations look straight up beautiful. If anyone ever says that movies can’t be art I would just show them one of the stills of this movie. On top of that the movement in all the creatures are incredibly fluid, and the environment seems to react to them in the way you would think it should, such as bushes moving as they walk by them. The animation in the movie holds its own against every other Pixar movie.-They may be overlooked but the messages of Corporations trying to take over everything that is shown in the beginning of the movie are very true and easy to relate to. But the movie has many other messages as well such as kids bringing the best out of people, and learning to let go. These are are relatable experiences/messages that will strike everyone in different ways which is a major triumph of the movie.
Up is an amazing movie with a very deep story and characters. The final shots of the movie leave you smiling from ear to ear at the adventure you just witnessed and how even though hardships were had everything ended well. Up makes you feel so many emotions in just over the course of two hours which very few movies can do. Most Pixar movies get sequels because of their popularity or money making power but I’m glad Up hasn’t because it is able to stand on its own as an amazing movie rather than an amazing movie series, and it may have topped the list of my favorite Pixar movies, which is an insane feat but it deserves it because of how high Up the storytelling is.
