Apocalypse Now
Over 2 and half hours of utter chaos, Apocalypse Now is a spectacular depiction of the Vietnam war, focusing on the psychological toll of the fighting rather than the action.
You follow Willard into the heart of darkness and feel connected to the crew throughout, captivated by their journey. Possibly the best dialogue I have ever heard with certain lines being impossible to forget. “The bullshit was piled up so fast in Vietnam, you needed wings to stay above it” - is one of the many lines that really stick out and leaves its mark. There are some minor issues with the film, such as the French Manor House, which was not necessarily the best portrayal of the French involvement however it is massively overshadowed by the good.
Not only this but the film is unbelievably well shot, having one of the most iconic and best shots I’ve seen, with Ben emerging from the swamp, epitomising his character as one that thrives in wallowing in the chaos and adapting to overcome any obstacle in his way. Coppola's best and it's not even close.
