Never thought David Lynch talking about a pet tortoise would make me cry but here we are. This film feels like a hug. The themes are kind of heavy but it’s so well written and so well performed that it still manages to feel comforting. I was nervous to go into this at first because I thought it would just be depressing and overly existential but I was pleasantly surprised. I like that it didn’t feel so nihilistic and was actually just a pretty reassuring and heart warming story about acceptance.
This is the first Harry Dean Stanton film I’ve watched but this has made me reallly excited to watch Paris, Texas. Finding out that he died around the same time of the release just makes that final shot where he breaks the fourth wall a lot more special. I’ll definitely be rewatching this soon.
